Sand Casting
The key to the sand casting process is using a sand core to manufacture various metal components. This manufacturing method is suitable for casting of multiple sizes and shapes while achieving good precision and surface finish.
The manufacturing process of sand casting includes the following main steps:
- Building sand core: The sand core is made using sand of a specific formula according to design requirements and product specifications. It needs to withstand high temperatures and pressures and maintain the required shape stability during the filling process.
- Mould opening: After the sand mould is completed, it's placed in the mould to form a complete casting mould. The design of the mould comes from the product's shape and size requirements.
- Fill Metal: Metal molten (such as aluminium alloy or cast iron) is poured into the sand mould at an appropriate temperature.
- Cooling and solidification: After the metal is filled, it is allowed to cool and solidify in the sand mould. This critical step ensures that the metal achieves the required hardness and structural stability.
- Demolding and Cleaning: After the metal has completely cooled, the formed metal casting is removed from the sand mould. This is followed by cleaning and finishing to remove any remaining grit and other surface defects and to refine the casting's appearance.
The main advantages of sand casting machining include its adaptability, ability to produce castings of various sizes and shapes, and cost-effectiveness and suitability for small to medium-volume production needs.
